Demo County
Over 80 industrial wind turbines, each 600 feet tall, have been proposed across Demo County's farmland and rural communities. Residents deserve to weigh in before the project is approved.

Demo Ridge Wind Project
Developer: FakeWind Energy
FakeWind Energy has filed plans with the FAA for 80+ industrial wind turbines across Demo County. Final placements may shift, but the filings give us the clearest current picture of where this project would land and what scale it would reach.

Why we’re concerned
These aren't hypothetical worries — they're documented impacts from industrial wind projects across the country.
Property values
Studies have documented property value declines of 7–25% for homes near industrial wind turbines. For a rural county like Demo, where land and property are families' primary wealth, this is significant. Reduced property values also reduce tax revenue for schools and county services.
Health & quality of life
Industrial turbines generate low-frequency noise and infrasound. Residents near existing wind farms have reported sleep disruption, headaches, and stress. Turbines also produce shadow flicker — a strobe-like effect from spinning blades — that affects nearby homes during certain hours of the day.
Scale & proximity
These are not small windmills. At 600 feet, each turbine is nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. With 80+ turbines proposed, the visual and physical impact on the landscape would be permanent and irreversible.
Farmland & rural character
Demo County's identity is rooted in its agricultural heritage and open prairie. Industrializing thousands of acres permanently changes the character of land and community that generations have built and maintained.
Wildlife
Wind turbines kill thousands of birds and bats annually. Demo County sits along a regional flyway, and is near key wetland habitat that migratory species rely on each season.
Local water aquifer
Portions of Demo County's water table sit only a few feet below the surface. Turbine bases extend roughly 20 ft into the ground and span 60 ft in diameter — posing a documented risk of contaminating or disrupting the local aquifer that residents and farmers depend on.
Who actually benefits?
The electricity generated will not stay in Demo County. It feeds into the regional grid and is sold elsewhere. Construction jobs are temporary (12–18 months). Permanent operations jobs are minimal (typically fewer than 15). Meanwhile, non-participating landowners bear the costs.
Communities are winning
Across the country, organized residents have made themselves heard and the decision went on the record. Here’s the proof.
Mock County, KS
RejectedPlanning commission rejected a FakeWind proposal after organized residents pushed for stronger setbacks. First such rejection in the region.
Sample County, KS
MoratoriumAchieved a 3-year moratorium on wind and solar construction through organized advocacy.
Pretend County, KS
MoratoriumPlanning commission voted 6–1 for a 2-year moratorium on a wind farm after public hearings drew packed rooms.
Hypothetical County, KS
Court victoryLandowners won a court case — judge ruled commissioners lacked authority to issue the Conditional Use Permit.
Imaginary County, KS
Developer withdrewDeveloper abandoned the project after the county unanimously blocked wind and solar development.
Roleplay County, KS
Conditions negotiatedResidents and the developer negotiated stronger setbacks, sound limits, and a decommissioning bond before the permit was issued.
Placeholder County, KS
StalledResidents lobbied for stricter regulations that stalled the proposal indefinitely while the county studied impacts.
